Scholarships

Ever since I arrived here in the United States to pursue further studies, my mind has been pretty well occupied with the real cost of higher education in the US and in Kenya. How fortunate are those who have parents and families who can pay for them to study beyond high school, beyond the conventional

and to keep them there expenses and all.

I keep wondering what would have happened to my higher education had my parents had one, two or three more children in today's Kenya. As it stands, the cost of educating a child has skyrocketed beyond what any reasonable family can tolerate not only for the short run, but also in the foreseeable future. Hence the need for scholarships and financing of education.

Last time I laid my hands on a copy of the dailies in Kenya, I was earnestly looking beyond the tenders and other advertisements, to see if there were any genuine opportunities to study and study for free at that. I hope that people will use this post to start thinking about how to relieve the educational burden for students who show some promise in sports, academics, music, drama, dance and the arts.

High School: Bursaries are in short supply for the number of students who were there. A few companies and foundations offer these. College: I understand that there are government scholarships for students to study abroad but that these are gazetted.

Come on people, let us start putting these opportunities out there:

Here are some interesting ones that I have heard of:

a) United World Colleges scholarships - for two year IB studies in places like Singapore, Canada, Wales, India and USA - This is one for those whohave just cleared 4th form or equivalent and, get this, they advertise this through the daily newspaper soon after KCSE results come out.

b) African Leadership Academy - High School Students

I know these are a drop in the ocean. Join me in creating a list of resources that we can use to drive our young people to financed education.

This is great! I would wish to encourage you for this is not only ingenious but also generous of you. I am looking forward to reading about a scholarship that falls within my purview; Master's Philosophy. Thanks and congrats.
