In sports; who do you pick, and why?Posted by Amir Ibrahim in Untagged |

Just off from watching the tennis chamionships at Wimbledon. Was with a rather large group of people and I was surprised at the passion with which we were supporting or opposing the players. I mean, what are the stakes, what is in it for us?
Most tournaments there is a national, racial or such other affiliation that guides viewer preferences, but that was absent this weekend, at least in the main finals ( ladies, Serena versus Venus Williams and gentlemen, Roger Federer versus Rafael Nadal. Still that did not stop the passionate supporters from declaring that Venus was elegant and lady-like and Serena brutish and manly, or that Nadal was uncouth and unwashed, while Federer was all the gentleman. Even the commentators seemed to be dragged in, declaring that the heart was for Venus and Nadal, but the mind was for Serena and Federer.
In the event, Venus overcame her sister in a somewhat boring match (hearts over mind) and Federer was vanquished by his nemesis Nadal (mind victorious this time around).

why do we pick who we do and why are we so ready to go to such great lengths, still hoarse here, on such unimportant contests?

I am not a big sports fan.. however, when I do... I support the weakest link. Or a Kenyan team/ Kenyan if its on the international arena.

I always pick the side that entertains me most, in football I would always go with Arsenal, even if it meant I was going to lose, or Turkey or Russia, or Argentina. Also, like Amina, I like the underdog, or the challenger, like Nadal or the Boston Celtics. That makes winning all the more exhilirating, especially if there is betting involved. How did you do on Turkey? Made a pile?
