I just broke up with my girlfriend. Granted, she had no idea we were an item but that does not give her the right to break up with me. She found out I was cheating on her by going out with her behind her back. Maybe if I came clean sometime in the last 3 months, she would have found it in her heart to forgive me. She’s incensed that she had to find out from someone, who heard it from someone I told in confidence. I’m incensed that a private conversation I had with a friend got back to my girlfriend who I was going out with behind her back. On some primitive level, she’s right. I should have told her personally. Then she would have broken up with me sooner. On a more intelligent level, she has no right breaking up with me for going out with her behind her back. Her breaking up with me on the grounds of not being open with her acknowledges the legitimacy of the relationship. Her consent wasn’t sought at the beginning, so she should have no say in the ending. But I’m a gentleman, so I’ll respect her wishes. Now that I’m single and heartbroken, I’ll need a rebound chic to recover. I think I’ll give her a call.
